The Lodge

An alternate history, told in granite and timber.

Fiction

A lodge that was never built

Imagine the island's pink granite, already cut and dressed for the lighthouse, had also been used for something quieter: a low guest lodge in the lee of the light, with thick walls, deep window seats and fires lit against the southerly.

That is Gabo Island Resort Lodge. Forty-two rooms, suites and tents across six categories, a reception in a restored granite building, a lighthouse-view lounge, the Lantern Room restaurant, and wilderness glamping at the island's northern end. It is credible on purpose and fictional on principle.

Everything on this page is invented. There is no lodge on Gabo Island, no resort operator and no plan to build one. The real island has a heritage lightstation managed by Parks Victoria, and that is a better reason to visit than anything we could make up.

What the fiction is for

GIRL is a showcase. The website behaves like a real resort so that the booking system behind it can be seen working: live availability, room categories, seasonal pricing, deposits and cancellation terms, Stripe payments and an operator portal. The booking system is real software that runs real accommodation businesses.

Gabo Island is real. The resort isn't. The booking system is. No accommodation, transport or travel service is sold here. See the FAQ for what a booking actually buys.
Fiction

Shared facilities

Beside the main lodge, in the southern part of the precinct, an old granite service courtyard has been turned into The Granite Bath House: a sauna, a heated stone pool, a cold plunge, and robes and towels. It is a shared facility for all guests, not a feature of any one room.

Fiction

Granite and timber

Low buildings in the island's own stone, so the lighthouse stays the tallest thing on the horizon.

Weather as a feature

Real

The island underneath

The light, the granite, the penguins and the sea are real. Read about them.
